CLOVIS, NM – An elderly woman died after she was shot while allegedly opening her front door Wednesday evening, Clovis police said, and officers are seeking the public’s help in the investigation.
Police said Clovis Police Dispatch received a 911 call from a resident in the 1300 block of Traver Street on Wednesday around 6:53 p.m. The caller, an 80-year-old man, said his wife, Virginia Montoya, 78, had been shot when she opened her front door. Officers and emergency medical services arrived on scene and found the woman, who had suffered “a single gunshot wound to the chest,” according to a news release. Montoya was immediately rushed to Plains Regional Medical Center by Clovis EMS, but she succumbed to her injuries.
“The 9th Judicial District Major Crimes Unit has been activated and is investigating this homicide,” Clovis police said in the news release. “Residents in the Traver area are asked to check their home security camera systems in case their systems have captured relevant footage.”
Clovis police said more information will be released during the course of this investigation.
