“Today we got caught in an ice storm on the river when we were finishing up,” Shepard said. “It took us two hours longer than we expected, and as we were driving home we just got caught in the snowstorm.”

Kyle Homan and his friend, Carter Wenger, were on the Mayflower Gulch Trail making the most of the conditions.

“I’m on my splitboard, he’s on his skis and we go up about a mile, stretch our legs and go out,” Wenger said.

The two said they originally appeared in a T-shirt and shorts.

“We were hoping for a sunset, but with the clouds closing in, we thought about going a little further east, but we figured we were here, so let’s make the best of what we got,” Homan said . “It’s certainly good to be outside.”

Signs along Interstate 70 warned motorists of heavy snow and high winds. According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, snow is expected in the central and northern mountains, bringing up to a foot of snow.

“April is the best time to be outside,” Homan said. “You get a little bit of everything.”
