April 18—The Cumberland County Commission unanimously approved two resolutions Monday night authorizing the county to use money from debt service and a state grant for capital fund expenses and courthouse repairs and renovations.
The first resolution authorizes the issuance of interest-bearing general obligation capital bonds of Cumberland County. The resolution is necessary to allow the county to use $1.7 million in debt service fund balances for capital equipment.
Items included included the initial setup of the new Cumberland County Building Codes Department, emergency communications equipment, three ambulance remounts for the EMS, a new box truck for county maintenance, five new patrol cars for the sheriff’s office, a used tanker truck and a new one. support unit for the Cumberland County Fire Department. Also included were several maintenance items and a new freezer at the county jail.
The expenditures were previously approved in the province’s 2023-’24 budget, but the resolution is required to access the funds for use. The resolution was approved unanimously.
The second resolution was to access funds for the construction and renovation of the Cumberland County Courthouse. Gov. Bill Lee, Tennessee Speaker of the House Cameron Sexton and Sen. Paul Bailey awarded Cumberland County a $2 million grant to help with repairs and renovations to the courthouse. The resolution moves the funds to the courthouse maintenance fund budget so they can be used for the project. The resolution passed unanimously 17-0.
First District Commissioner Dewey Walker was not present at the meeting.
