Dorchester County prepares for possible tropical storm

SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCBD) – Weather forecasters are predicting that a tropical storm brewing in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico could bring some rain and wind to the Charleston area. Emergency responders are also reminding residents that it is still National Preparedness Month.

Emergency responders in nearby counties are taking precautions and telling residents to stock up on supplies, especially in Dorchester County, where Tropical Storm Debby hit them hard.

“Start preparing,” said David Amann, Dorchester County’s emergency management specialist. “Once you’re in that uncertainty, you want to have that conversation with your family. Maybe renew your emergency kit. Don’t go crazy, like running to the store to buy milk and fill up your gas tank.”

He advises staying alert and monitoring updates, but does not predict the storm will be as powerful as earlier this year.

“Right now, it doesn’t look like it’s going to be as bad in Dorchester County as it was in Debby,” Amann said. “It’s still a long way off to make those exact determinations, so again, same as in Debby. Refresh that kit, you may have used that kit during Debby.”

Dorchester County is among Charleston, Berkeley and Colleton counties where residents can apply for SBA loans starting tomorrow, September 24. Berkeley County is also opening its Disaster Loan Outreach Center for those in need of in-person assistance.
