Draymond claims a little ‘depression’ for Celtics after Finals win

Draymond claims minor ‘depression’ ahead for Celtics after Finals win originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

With four NBA championships on his resume, Warriors star Draymond Green is intimately familiar with the emotions that come with winning a title.

So after the Celtics reached the NBA Finals on Monday night, Green shared his thoughts on what Boston’s stars will likely be experiencing mentally in the coming weeks and months.

“The feeling that he’s going through and experiencing right now — so high, that cloud that he’s rolling through in life — in a few weeks he’s going to go through a period of almost depression,” Green said of Boston star Jayson Tatum.

Tatum is currently on top of the world, which will “take three to four weeks,” Green continued.

But once the feelings and benefits of being a recent NBA champion wear off, things will get tougher for the Celtics’ top players, with Green specifically referring to Tatum.

“What causes that depression is, ‘Man, that feeling felt so good. My biggest fear now is never feeling that feeling again,” Green said. “And guess what, there’s absolutely nothing you can do about it at that point. … You have to wait at least a whole year; at its maximum it is infinite.”

The Celtics have as good a chance as anyone to be back on the NBA mountaintop next season, with the team retaining virtually all of its rotation pieces.

Still, nothing is ever guaranteed in the NBA, as injuries can happen and elite players often ask to be traded, even outside the league’s top teams.

As a result, Green’s comments may come across as advice to Tatum and recently crowned Finals MVP Jaylen Brown. Not many players have been as fortunate as Green to achieve that championship feeling multiple times, so it’s important for these young Celtics stars to stay level-headed as they enter a new phase of their careers.
