A driver died after his vehicle plunged over a cliff Thursday along Highway 1 on the San Francisco Peninsula coast between Pacifica and Half Moon Bay.
The vehicle left the roadway just south of Gray Whale Cove State Beach in Montara and fell 200 feet, Cal Fire’s San Mateo/Santa Cruz unit said. Cal Fire reported the incident just after 1 p.m
A CHP helicopter has since lowered a person onto the rocks where the vehicle landed, Cal Fire said. There were several agencies on site.
Traffic along highway 1 was affected by one-way traffic. Motorists were advised to use alternate routes.
CHP later confirmed the crash was fatal.
Cal Fire spokesperson Cecile Juliette said the driver was the only person in the car. It is not known what caused the car to end up off the embankment.
According to CHP, all lanes of Highway 1 reopened shortly before 5 p.m.
