A Union County family fined for keeping chickens as pets has won a big victory.
The family originally lived in a Waxhaw neighborhood.
However, according to neighborhood rules, they were not allowed to own poultry, but they were allowed to own pets, as long as you didn’t make money from them.
The family said in this case that the birds were pets that they even bathed and blow-dried in the house, and that they did not eat the animals or sell their eggs.

The homeowners association fined them more than $31,000, but the appeals court just ruled that the chickens are legally pets, not poultry, and says the family doesn’t have to pay.
Jason Stoogenke of Action 9 has contacted the HOA to see if they plan to appeal.
