Two people, one in critical condition, were injured Wednesday morning when a car and a Vallejo city maintenance truck collided. Two firefighters were injured while trying to rescue the victim from their car, fire officials said.

At around 8:35 a.m., emergency services were alerted to a report of a car fire at the intersection of Curtola Parkway and Solano Avenue.

Upon arrival, they found a two-door sedan and a maintenance vehicle from the City of Vallejo Corporation Yard that had been rear-ended and sustained significant damage. The vehicle was on fire, according to the Vallejo Fire Department.

Police officers used fire extinguishers from their vehicles to bring the fire under control, while firefighters, who had just responded to a vegetation fire, arrived and immediately went to the burning vehicle. They found one occupant in the driver’s seat and performed an emergency rescue through the driver’s side window.

The resident, who was in critical condition, was sent to a nearby trauma center. Fire officials said paramedics administered tranexamic acid medication to control blood loss and performed a needle decompression procedure to keep the patient alive until they reached the emergency room.

An occupant of the other vehicle was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

According to the fire brigade, two firefighters were slightly injured during the rescue operation and were taken to hospital for check-ups.
