Four injured and one arrested after clashes between supporters and opponents of the Iranian government in London

LONDON (AP) — British police say four people were injured and one arrested when supporters of Iranian authorities clashed with anti-government protesters at an event in London to mark the death of President Ebrahim Raisi.

The Metropolitan Police said officers were called on Friday evening to “reports of disorder” at a venue in the Wembley area of west London where an event was being held to commemorate Raisi’s death in a helicopter crash. Protesters had gathered outside the venue and clashes broke out, police said.

Police say one person has been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder. Four people were treated by paramedics for injuries not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing.

Police ordered those in attendance to disperse and said Saturday that detectives would examine social media images and other evidence to see if additional violations had been committed.

Raisi, a backer of Iran’s hardline Islamist regime, was killed Sunday along with the country’s foreign minister and six others in a crash in the country’s mountainous northwest. He was buried on Thursday in Iran’s holiest Shiite shrine.

Some Iranian expats have welcomed Raisi’s death. London is home to a large Iranian community, most of whom have left in the years since the country’s Islamic revolution in 1979.
