It has been a beloved institution in Ocean City, New Jersey for 94 years, but this weekend… Gillian’s Wonderland Pier is closing forever.
“Our kids grew up here. They all came to Wonderland Pier, there are a lot of memories here,” said Don Bercowetz, who has vacationed in Ocean City for decades.
Whether it’s a ride on the Ferris wheel that towers over the boardwalk, the log flume or a crazy worm roller coaster, Gillian’s has been putting a smile on children’s faces for generations.
“My own childhood, my children and my grandchildren, so it’s just kind of an ending,” Linda Rihl said.
After years of financial trouble, Jay Gillian, the owner of Gillian’s and the mayor of Ocean City, announced in August that the amusement pier will close for good, saying it is no longer a viable business.
While the monument’s future is still unclear, Councilman Jody Levchuk said he would like to see the rides and games remain at that location.
“I would love to see a vibrant amusement park at the base of the OC Boardwalk and continue to make Ocean City what it is today: a tourist attraction for family entertainment,” Levchuk said.
Eustace Mita owns the property. His company, ICONA Resorts, has hotels in Avalon. Cape May and Diamond Beach.
On Friday, Mita told CBS News Philadelphia, “The sun sets on Wonderland Pier on Monday. We are halfway through our plan for the property. We are very excited and think Ocean City will be too.”
For now, Don Bercowetz cherishes his memories with his family and looks for one last thrill this weekend.
“It’s sad, but my wife and I are going on the Ferris wheel for good old times,” he said.
The 6th Street Pizza and Grill will also close.
If you want one last thrill on the pier, it is open Friday from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, Saturday from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM and Sunday, the last day, from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM
