Heat waves in the western US continue to affect much of the western US over the long weekend.

…FROM THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE…

Friday and Saturday will be EXTREMELY HOT

A significant and increasingly dangerous heat wave is expected to intensify along the West Coast as we head into the long weekend.

The widespread high temperatures that reached 100 and 110 degrees Fahrenheit in lower elevations of California on Thursday afternoon will be even higher on Friday afternoon. Saturday is expected to be the hottest day of this heat wave, with highs in the 110s being common in California, outside of the cooling effects of the Pacific Ocean near the coast and naturally cooler higher elevations.

Several record temperatures can be expected in the coming days.

Locally, highs in the 120s are possible in typical hot spots of the Desert Southwest. Triple-digit heat will extend northward into the Pacific Northwest and parts of the central Great Basin, with widespread highs soaring into the 90s and low 100s. The duration of this heat is also a concern, as scorching, above-average temperatures are forecast to persist into next week.

Thursday’s oppressive heat and humidity across the southern Plains and lower Mississippi Valley will move eastward into the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast by the end of the week. High temperatures are expected to soar into the upper 90s and low 100s, with heat indices soaring above 110 in the lower Mississippi Valley.
