NEW YORK — New York State has expanded a deadline for storm survivors on Long Island.

Homeowners now have an extra month to apply for support historic flooding in Augustbut you may want to start the process now.

Deadline extended for emergency repair grants for storm damage on Long Island

The original deadline was Monday, but on Friday the governor’s office extended it until November 8. They say they have the money and they want to give people more time. It is currently unclear how many people have applied for the support.

Eligible homeowners in Nassau and Suffolk counties can apply for financing up to $50,000 for emergency home repairs. Click here to apply.

Long Island homeowner pays thousands out of pocket while waiting for government aid

Right now, people are paying thousands of dollars out of their own pockets while they wait for the state to cut a check and pay them back.

Stony Brook homeowner Deirdre McCool had no insurance and says she paid more than $30,000 for drywall and carpeting just to make her home livable again after it flooded.

“I’ve lived alone in upstate New York for sixty years. I’ve paid my property taxes, paid my IRS taxes, everything, and this is what I have to go through? They know I own the house.
