How hot did it get over the holiday weekend? Florida broke several records. Will the cold front help?

As promised, Memorial Day weekend brought plenty of heat to Florida, with several cities setting records when it came to temperatures.

Most of the state won’t get much relief today, although a “cold” front is moving into the state.

Humid conditions will make conditions feel even warmer, with heat indices reaching triple digits over the three-day weekend and expected to reach as high as 105 in some locations today.

Here’s what happened this past weekend and what to expect in the coming days.

Several Florida cities set heat records during the Memorial Day holiday

Record high temperatures in Melbourne and Fort Pierce during the Memorial Day weekend of May 2024.

Records are made to be broken and unfortunately in this case several were broken during the unofficial start of summer throughout Florida. Record broken included:

  • Sunday May 26

    • West Palm Beach: 95

    • Fort Lauderdale: 96

    • Miami: 96

    • Winterhaven: 98

    • Orlando: 97

    • Sanford: 97

    • Leesburg: 96

Why is it so hot?

An area of high pressure over the eastern Gulf of Mexico and the Florida Peninsula means little cloud cover, according to AccuWeather. sinking air associated with the system will result in sparse cloud cover.

“This will allow the intense sunshine of late May to expand and warm areas from southern and central Texas to much of Florida, South Carolina and Louisiana, as well as southern and central parts of Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia,” AccuWeather said.

Will the heat continue across Florida?

Expect temperatures to be 5 to 10 degrees above historical averages, according to AccuWeather. More records may be broken.

The extreme heat will persist along much of the Interstate 10 and 20 corridors until midweek, forecasters said.

Will the ‘cold’ front approaching Florida provide some relief from the heat?

A ‘cold’ front is approaching Florida and could increase the chance of showers and storms. Don’t expect temperatures to drop much.

Early Tuesday, the front was located along the Interstate 10 corridor and was expected to drift southward throughout the day before coming to a halt just offshore this evening, according to National Weather Service Mobile.

According to the National Weather Service Tampa Bay, storms are expected to hit the Nature Coast on Tuesday evening and Wednesday, reaching East Central Florida on Wednesday and sticking around for the rest of the week.

Tallahassee, North Florida: A chance of rain and thunderstorms on Tuesday morning, then dry until Friday and a chance of storms again on Saturday. Highs will generally be in the upper 80s to mid 90s each afternoon in Tallahassee, but in the low to mid 90s with a heat index around 100 in north-central Florida Tuesday before drier air moves into the area Wednesday and Thursday, according to the National Weather Service Jacksonville. High temperatures on Wednesday and Thursday are expected to be slightly above normal, around 90 to 90 degrees.

Central Florida: Isolated thunderstorms are possible north of Interstate 4 Tuesday morning, bringing strong winds and locally heavy rain showers. Afternoon temperatures will rise into the mid-90s, with peak heat indices between 100 and 105 in east-central Florida before residents see some relief late in the week, according to the National Weather Service, Melbourne.

South Florida: Scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible today, with the highest coverage expected over the eastern half of Florida. According to the National Weather Service, Miami, some storms could be strong and could bring high winds, small hail, frequent lightning and locally heavy rain. Heat indices are approaching 105 and may briefly reach 110 over parts of the East Coast this afternoon. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible throughout the rest of the work week. Any storm may bring gusts of wind, frequent lightning and heavy rain showers. Peak heat indexes of 100 to 105 are possible through mid-week.

Southwest Florida: While the cold front continues to linger over the Florida Peninsula through midweek, scattered showers and storms remain possible over Southwest Florida Wednesday and Thursday afternoon. According to the National Weather Service, Tampa Bay, temperatures will remain warm through Friday, with highs in the mid-90s inland and low to mid-90s along the coast.
