Dec. 11—JAMESTOWN — Jamestown police have released the name of the officer who shot and killed a man involved in a reported active-shooter incident outside Fred’s Den on Dec. 3.

Sergeant Cory Beckman, a five-year veteran of the Jamestown Police Department, was the first officer on scene and the only one involved in a shootout with the suspect, Devin Quinn Fontenot, 27, Jamestown, according to Police Chief Scott Edinger.

Beckman is a member of the James Valley Special Operations Team, a K-9 handler from Briggs, and a member of the department’s peer support team.

He remains on standard paid administrative leave while the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation investigates the incident.

Fontenot refused to comply with an order to drop his weapon, endangering the safety of the police sergeant and others, Edinger said. Fontenot was shot by Beckman.

Fontenot died of wounds sustained by gunfire.

According to police, the Stutsman County Communications Center received a 911 call at 1:17 a.m. on Dec. 3 from a man armed with a gun and a knife who was in the parking lot behind Fred’s Den, 113 1st Ave. S stood. The caller reported the The man had been involved in a physical altercation in the bar and had been removed.

While officers responded, the 911 caller reported a man shooting at a building, firing many rounds. When the first officer arrived on scene, Fontenot was still shooting in the parking lot.

After Fontenot was shot, officers administered first aid to him and he was transported to Jamestown Regional Medical Center, where he died from his injuries.

No further information will be released by the Jamestown Police Department until the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation investigation, internal policy review and administrative review are completed, Edinger said.
