Lakeside Union School District unanimously passes new Parents Bill of Rights

LAKESIDE, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) – The Lakeside Union School District board unanimously approved a new “Parents Bill of Rights” during Thursday’s meeting amid dueling positions on the policy.

It was standing room only inside the meeting as dozens of people signed up to comment publicly on both sides of the discussion.

“It allows us as parents to continue to protect them as we see fit. That’s what this is about. It’s not about anti-anything,” Jennifer Thorpe said.

Nancy Culver noted, “Most of the rights are already in place. You’re just repeating laws that you already have to follow.”

The Lakeside Union Parents Bill of Rights includes some of the following:

  • Reports of bullying, suicidal behavior, intent, academic performance and, most controversially, sexual transition.

“It is clear that the true intent is to force the schools to hand their children out to their parents before they are ready,” Culver said.

“When these kids don’t feel safe at home, teachers are mandated reporters. Report it! Don’t keep secrets from parents,” said Sharie Finn.

Concerns about the bill ranged from safety for LGBTQ students to potential lawsuits. Advocates supported full transparency for families.

The California Education Code currently encourages “preserving a student’s right to privacy” and states that disclosing information about their sexuality without consent may violate California anti-discrimination laws.

After hours of public comment, the board voted unanimously to approve the Parents Bill of Rights.

Board Chairman Andrew Hayes explained this statement in part: “My job is to represent my constituents – not to be a rubber stamp for the policies of Sacramento politicians and bureaucrats who intend to undermine parents’ rights to additional say in eroding the lives and education of their children. .”
