LaMonica McIver moves closer to November ballot for New Jersey’s 10th Congressional District

Just days after winning the Democratic special primary in the 10th Congressional District, Newark City Council Speaker LaMonica McIver appears set to represent her party on the ballot again in November.

The seat became vacant when Rep. Donald Payne Jr. died this spring, so a special election will be held in September to complete his term. Winning the primary, however, was no guarantee that McIver would be on the ballot to replace him this fall.

That decision rests with the local county committees within the district, and Brendan Gill, chairman of the MTC Democratic County Committee, said Thursday morning that the Essex, Hudson and Union committees will likely nominate McIver to run in the general election.

McIver is running against Republican candidate Carmen Bucco in both races.

Who was Rep. Donald Payne Jr.?

Payne, 65, who died April 24 of heart complications stemming from diabetes, served six terms in the House of Representatives. He succeeded his father, Donald Payne Sr., who represented the 10th District from 1989 until the elder congressman’s death in 2012.
