Lowndes County residents prepare for Hurricane Debby after looking back at the impact of Hurricane Idalia

A hurricane warning is in effect for parts of South Georgia due to Hurricane Debby.

Debby is following a similar path to Hurricane Idalia, which hit nearly 11 months ago.

Channel 2’s Michael Doudna was live tonight at 11pm in Lowndes County on WSB and many residents don’t want to see a repeat of last year.

The storm has blown down trees and power, causing a lot of damage and headaches for residents, so now they are taking Debby seriously and praying it doesn’t last long.

“It was really bad,” said one resident. “We just pray that it will be much better than last time.”

Residents also recalled the impact of Hurricane Idalia, which left more than 95 percent of homes without power, toppled trees that blocked roads and crushed cars and homes.

“You couldn’t get in or out, you had to climb over trees and walk through backyards, it was ridiculous,” said one resident.

Five trees fell on Cedrick Wilson’s home, causing more than $100,000 in damage.

“It’s an earth-shattering feeling. The whole foundation of the house is shaking. It’s dramatic to see them fall and the garden destroyed,” he said.

And now, almost a year later, Debby looks set to return for round two, with even more wind and rain.

“We’re all holding our breath. Because the track looks very much like Hurricane Idalia,” they said.

According to Lowndes County EMA, the storm could pack winds of up to 73 mph (117 km/h) and drop 10 to 18 ounces of rain on already saturated ground.

Wilson takes the lessons of last year to heart and makes sure food, water and power are on hand for days… all the while hoping Debby doesn’t emulate Idalia.
