Maddow Blog | The problems at the RNC continue as the party parts ways with its chief counsel

Almost immediately afterwards Donald TrumpThe party’s hand-picked team took control of the Republican National Committee — which includes his daughter-in-law — and the party’s new leaders set about making significant personnel changes. In mid-March, the RNC even hired two new attorneys to oversee the party’s legal efforts during the election year.

Normally that wouldn’t be particularly noticeable, but almost two months later, it’s worth checking out the duo.

One of the attorneys hired by the RNC was Christina Bobb, who was tapped to serve as the party’s senior election integrity counsel. However, it didn’t take long for an unfortunate problem to surface: Bobb was recently indicted for alleged election-related crimes.

The other attorney was longtime Republican attorney Charlie Spies, who was hired to serve as chief counsel to the RNC. At least, that was the idea two months ago. NBC News reported this weekend:

After the news was made official, Trump turned to his social media platform to celebrate the developments. “Great news for the Republican Party. RINO attorney Charlie Spies is out as RNC Chief Counsel,” the former president wrote, denouncing the veteran Republican attorney hired by his own RNC team.

At first glance, Spies seemed to bring an impressive partisan resume to the table. The attorney has worked for a host of prominent Republican officials and party organizations, including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Jeb Bush’s super PAC and Mitt Romney’s 2008 presidential campaign.

But that’s not the kind of experience that Team Trump finds impressive. In fact, Spies’ recent history with the former president helps explain his short tenure with the RNC.

For example, the NBC News report added that in 2021, Spies publicly contradicted false claims that voting machines would switch votes. When asked during a panel at the Conservative Political Action Conference what to do if voting machines changed votes, he pushed back against the false conspiracy theory supported by Trump allies.

“I may get booed off stage for this, but I have to say that’s just not true. There is simply no evidence whatsoever that it is true,” Spies said at the time.

In fact, a Washington Post report last weekend noted that the lawyer’s RNC career was cut short, at least in part, because Trump “became angry over his criticism of the former president’s false claims that the 2020 election was stolen .”

When the former president recently sat down with Time Magazine, he said he would have difficulty hiring someone who rejected his ridiculous election lies. Apparently this attitude also applies to the RNC.

Not everything was going well at the RNC before the new leadership team took over. Recent developments suggest that the party’s problems continue.
