A Florida man is accused of fatally beating another man after he failed to return his borrowed car on time.

Matthew Weldon, 37, is charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of 49-year-old Carroll Bryan.

Officers responded to a 911 call just after 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21, after a neighbor reported Weldon “told him he had killed someone,” according to a Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office news release.

When officers arrived at the Palm Harbor home, they reportedly found Weldon covered in blood.

“Weldon told officers, ‘He’s dead’ and pointed toward the home,” the news release said.

Officers found Bryan lying on the patio of Weldon’s home. He had injuries to his head, neck and arm.

Police said Weldon and Bryan met two weeks earlier at a local bar in Clearwater. A week later, Weldon agreed to lend him his car.

“Bryan did not return the vehicle when he agreed, and Weldon became upset,” the news release said.

Police said the two men got into an argument after Bryan returned the vehicle on May 21.

“Detectives say based on the evidence at the scene, it appears that Bryan was on the rear patio of the residence when he was struck in the back of the head,” the news release said. “Bryan was then struck repeatedly while on the ground, causing further injuries.”

Weldon suffered minor injuries in the attack.

He is being held in the Pinellas County Jail, according to jail records. It is unclear whether he has retained an attorney to speak on his behalf.
