Man arrested on I-495 in Wrentham during search for possible explosive device in Haverhill

A man has been arrested in connection with a search for a potential explosive device in Haverhill.

Around 8 a.m. Friday morning, Haverhill Police were notified of a concern at a home on Rosebud Avenue. Upon arriving on scene, Haverhill Police requested assistance from State Police and began searching for a Haverhill resident, an adult male.

The man was located and arrested following a motor vehicle stop on Route 495 in Wrentham. Haverhill police will file criminal charges against him.

Out of an abundance of caution, neighbors were evacuated while members of the bomb squad assessed the potential dangers.

“Based on their assessments using robotic platforms and other tools, technicians determined that the device posed a significant hazard and could not be safely transported. They conducted a controlled explosion to render it safe and removed additional energetic material found at the scene. No injuries were reported,” the state fire marshal’s office said.

Residents in the area were allowed back inside on Friday afternoon. Rosebud Avenue will remain closed until emergency services leave the scene.
