A man was injured early Saturday morning in a shooting in the Austin neighborhood near a car carrying off-duty officers, according to Chicago police.
The man, 26, was sitting in a parked vehicle in the 1000 block of South Mayfield Avenue with four other people, including two off-duty Chicago police officers. As he got out of the car just before 1:30 a.m., a gunman in another vehicle shot him, police said.
Someone in the car fired back at the gunman, who then fled, police said. The off-duty officers and two other passengers took the man to a nearby hospital, where he was listed in serious condition. No other injuries were reported.
The police would not provide further details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The Civilian Office of Police Accountability and the Police Investigative Response Team are investigating the case. No one has been arrested, police said.
