Man remembers brother, popular Philadelphia bartender, who died in an accident while cycling

A popular Philadelphia bartender is being remembered as a beloved husband, brother and friend after he died following a bicycle accident in Kensington in late November.

Jason Lohr, 49, tragically died last weekend from injuries sustained in the crash that occurred on November 20.

“A part of me is gone and I don’t know how to replace it,” Dan Lohr said.

Jason Lohr was a bartender for several places including Standard Tap and Atlantis: The Lost Bar. He is described as a kind-hearted man who loved his neighborhood.

His brother is heartbroken by the loss.

“It was just surreal and it’s been surreal ever since,” Dan Lohr said.

Dan Lohr said his brother was an avid cyclist and even showed CBS News Philadelphia his helmet. It’s the same one he was wearing when he was hit by a car while cycling in Kensington.

Jason Lohr was driving north on Frankford Avenue around 11:30 PM on Wednesday, November 20, when a southbound car struck him as it attempted to turn left on East Hagert Street.

The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with police. No charges were filed as police continued to investigate.

“Unfortunately, it was just a situation where he had the helmet and it didn’t protect him,” Dan Lohr said.

Jason Lohr’s death marks the third cyclist struck and killed in Philadelphia until now this year.

There is no stop sign, traffic light or traffic light on Frankford Avenue, where the accident occurred Bike path. Chris Gale, executive director of the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia, said this may have helped with the incident, but he believes the city needs to do more to make the streets safer for everyone.

‘We still have work to do. We’re not done yet,” Gale said.

Dan Lohr said he would also be in favor of it more cycle paths in the city. He also had a message for Philadelphia cyclists, hoping to prevent what happened to his brother from happening to them.

“Use a headlamp to be proactive. If you’re going to wear dark clothing, maybe have reflective gear on, wear a helmet,” he said.

Standard Tap plans to hold a memorial service for Jason Lohr on Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.
