Pennsylvania State Police in Gibsonia said Andrew Graney, 36, was driving a Mazda at a high rate of speed on the Turnpike when he lost control. He hit the guardrail, veered back into traffic and crossed all three lanes, was struck by a tractor-trailer in the driver’s side door and came to a stop.
Graney was trapped in the car, state police said. He was later freed and taken to hospital by medical helicopter. He suspects serious internal injuries and was last listed in critical condition.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.
State police said evidence at the scene showed Graney had been drinking heavily before the crash. Charges are pending pending laboratory results from a blood draw.
The investigation is ongoing.
Due to the crash, all lanes of the Turnpike in that area were closed for approximately two hours.
