The Dallas Mavericks know they have a good thing going with head coach Jason Kidd, and they want it to stay that way. They announced Monday morning that they signed Kidd to a multi-year contract extension. Details of the contract have not been released.

“We are excited to have Coach Kidd continue to lead our team for years to come with this well-deserved contract extension,” Mavericks Governor Patrick Dumont said in a statement. “Kidd led our team to two playoff appearances in three seasons, and we look forward to his leadership as we continue to build and grow this already great franchise.”

Kidd, 51, is in his third season with the Mavericks. He took the team to the playoffs in 2021-22, his first season on the job, but missed the postseason the following year with a 38-44 record. But this season’s 50-32 record was good enough for a No. 5 seed, and the Mavs just sent home the Los Angeles Clippers to advance to Round 2.

“I have known Jason for a long time and I cannot think of a better, more qualified candidate to lead this team going forward,” said General Manager Nico Harrison. “As a former Hall of Fame NBA champion, Jason brings a wealth of experience and expertise to this role that cannot be duplicated. He has earned the trust and respect of our players and that of so many around the league, and I I look forward to working with him as we continue to build on the culture and foundation of success that he helped foster during his tenure as head coach.”

The Mavs have a tough assignment for Round 2. They face the Oklahoma City Thunder, who dispatched their first-round opponent, the New Orleans Pelicans, in just four games. But Dallas’ front office has a lot of confidence that Kidd is the right coach to lead the Mavs no matter what. Game 1 of that series kicks off Tuesday at 9:30 PM ET on TNT.
