McCane becomes the first woman to serve House District 72

Nov. 30 – OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma House Democratic Rep. Michelle McCane, D-Tulsa, is the first woman to serve in House District 72. McCane is a longtime educator with 14 years of service to the Tulsa community.

“I have worked closely with students, families, teachers and administrators, and have seen firsthand how effective policies can transform these classrooms and communities,” McCane said. “Throughout my career, I have been focused on ensuring that all students, regardless of their identity, beliefs or background, have access to the tools and support they need to succeed.”

McCane was named Support Employee of the Year at Edison Middle School in 2012-2013 and Teacher of the Year at McLain High School in 2020-2021. This year she was also named Teacher of the Year at Traice Academy High School.

McCane says she will use her experience in public education and community engagement to inspire her service to Oklahomans within the Legislature. McCane believes that religion should be kept out of the public school curriculum and that every student deserves to feel safe enough to express their own personal religious beliefs or lack thereof.

“I am committed to advocating for policies that prioritize high-quality education, support and retain our educators, and ensure every student can thrive,” said McCane. “My goal is to build an education system that empowers students and families, supports teachers, and strengthens Oklahoma’s future.”

McCane is an outspoken advocate for public education, LGBTQ+ students, teachers’ rights, and marginalized communities. She actively works to engage her community in conversations about how the Oklahoma Legislature can best serve the state of Oklahoma and all Oklahomans.
