The Mets have promoted another of their young players.
Not even a month after they promoted Brandon Sproat to Triple-A Syracuse, Mets now promote right-handed pitcher Jonas Tong to Double-A Binghamton, officially announced by a press release from the Rumble Ponies on Sunday.
The promotion comes after Tong dominated both levels of Single-A ball. The 21-year-old has pitched to a 6-4 record and 3.04 ERA in 21 starts this season. But it’s his strikeouts that are most impressive.
At Port St. Lucie, he struck out 36 batters in 18.2 innings before moving to Brooklyn and striking out 110 batters in 85 innings.
Tong, the Mets’ No. 10 prospect according to MLB Pipeline, has five games with eight or more strikeouts, including two with double figures against the Brooklyn Cyclones. He’ll now test his mettle in Double-A.
