(CBS DETROIT) – A Michigan trooper rescued a man who crashed his vehicle into a pond after someone nearby heard his cries for help, officials said.
At approximately 12:04 p.m. Tuesday, Monroe County dispatch received a 911 call from a resident living on Lulu Road near S. County Line Highway. The resident reported hearing someone yelling for help and saying he couldn’t swim.
The caller said the screams were coming from the back of their property, near a pond.
Monroe County Sheriff’s Deputy Shawna Hester was the first on the scene and discovered a man in the pond, about 20 feet from shore, struggling to stay afloat.
The officer jumped into the water with a flotation device provided by the homeowner and successfully rescued the man.
After being brought to shore, the man was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
During the investigation, officers discovered that a vehicle may have been involved in the incident and found fresh tracks leading north from a field to the pond.
Additionally, authorities say the man gave “conflicting information” after his rescue about whether anyone else was in the vehicle. After further investigation, the county’s dive team recovered an unoccupied black Jeep Wrangler from the pond.
The investigation is still ongoing.
