LINCOLN, NH – A 44-year-old man died Friday after an apparent fall while hiking in an icy area of New Hampshire’s White Mountains.
Search for New Hampshire Hiker
New Hampshire Fish and Game was alerted to the missing hiker, later identified as Christopher Huyler.
Huyler had left earlier in the day for a hike in the middle of Cannon Ball through the Coppermine Brook Valley to check conditions ahead of ski season, Fish and Game said.
At 4 p.m., Huyler told a family member that he was on his way back. When he didn’t return, the relative called for help.
Huyler’s car was found in Franken and a search was started.
Missing hiker found dead
Crews headed up the mountain around 9 p.m. According to Fish and Game, the search area was largely off-trail and required traversing through dense vegetation.
On Saturday around 1 a.m., Huyler’s body was found at an altitude of about 800 meters.
Additional search and rescue team members were called in, with a total of 21 people participating in the recovery.
It took crews until about 9 a.m. Saturday to carry the hiker about 3.2 miles off the mountain.
“It was apparent that the man had suffered a significant fall in icy terrain. He was wearing micro-spikes and was properly equipped with hiking gear,” Fish and Game said in a statement.
An autopsy has been scheduled to determine Hyler’s cause of death.
