Swede Mondo Duplantis broke the men’s pole vault world record for the eighth time by jumping 6.24 meters (20 feet, 5 inches) during a Diamond League competition in Xiamen, China, on Saturday.
Like Ukraine’s Sergey Bubka in the 1980s and 1990s, Duplantis has chosen to raise the bar by at least one centimeter on all his world records, starting with the first in February 2020. Each time he breaks them, he receives bonus money.
Duplantis’ next barrier – 20 feet, 6 inches – is significant because he could become the first man to clear 20 feet, 6 inches.
