Moreno Valley approves massive Aquabella project that will bring 15,000 apartments to the city

Moreno Valley city leaders approved the Aquabella project Wednesday, making way for a massive development that will bring 15,000 apartments to the city by the time it’s finished in 15 years.

The decision came after three hours of public comment, both for and against the project, which council members ultimately passed on a 3-1 vote.

On top of the thousands of apartments, the sprawling project will include high-end shops and restaurants, a luxury hotel and 300 acres of land dedicated to parks and schools, all intended to replace what is currently a vast swath of vacant land just east of the city. I-215 and south of SR-60.

While some residents say the change could leave a legacy for future generations, others say it could have a serious impact on the quality of life in the area, especially if it is completed next to one of the Inland Empire’s busiest hubs. Opponents also argue that now that the luxury and luxury options are complete, well-paying local jobs should be included.

City leaders say the plans are to build the apartments as affordable as possible, with Mayor Ulises Cabrera hoping this can help Southern California as it is in the midst of a housing crisis.

“I hope that some of these will be townhomes and apartments and that we actually open a path to homeownership,” the mayor said at the meeting. “Don’t just let people get stuck in that vicious circle of renting.”

Cabrera is also confident that the project will benefit both current and future residents, including those who travel long distances for work.

“If we have the opportunity to give our own residents those local jobs, I’m going to fight for them,” he said.
