(CBS DETROIT) – Detroit police are investigating a non-fatal shooting that happened Friday morning. Neighbors claim it was a domestic situation.

The shooting happened in the 16000 block of Edmore Drive. Police said when they arrived, they found a woman in her mid-30s struck by gunfire. The victim was taken to hospital where she was treated.

DPD has not released any new details, other than to say the shooting remains under investigation.

“I mean, we have kids in the house,” said Autumn Ryals, who lives a few blocks from the shooting scene. “And the fact that it’s domestic is just scary.”

Ryals and neighbors claim the shooter was the victim’s ex, who became enraged because the woman had started a new relationship with someone else.

“That’s the way society is,” Ryals said. “Men don’t care anymore.”

Ryals, who said she grew up in a home where domestic violence was common, follows a certain rule. ‘Never let a man lay his hands on you. If a man raises his voice, leave… That’s a red flag,” she said.

Now she wants people to stop ignoring the warning signs, no matter how big or small they seem.

“Any red flag you see, even if it’s just the smallest thing, go. Run fast. Don’t walk,” Ryals said.

Police were still searching for the suspect and asked anyone with information to call CrimeStoppers. The number is 800-SPEAK UP.
