NWS counts 29 possible tornado tracks in Chicago area Monday night; tornado touched down in West Loop area

CHICAGO (CBS) — The National Weather Service examined 29 possible tornado tracks from the powerful and dangerous storms that hit the area the night before.

Five separate tornadoes have been confirmed so far. One of the tornadoes, an EF-1, struck the Near West Side of Chicago and the far western portions of the Loop. An EF-1 tornado also struck near Channahon, and another EF-1 struck the Bristol and Oswego areas in Kendall County.

An EF-0 tornado or larger also caused damage in Justice and Bridgeview, and another tornado of at least EF-0 struck Crown Point, Indiana. Under the Enhanced Fujita Scale, an EF-0 includes 3-second wind gusts of 65 to 85 mph, while an EF-1 has 3-second wind gusts of 86 to 110 mph.

The amount injury The cause of each of these tornadoes was not immediately known. But in Oswego, strong winds uprooted large trees, which toppled them onto homes and cars. One Oswego resident said she heard a boom that sounded “like a bomb.”

Large trees were uprooted from streets in the West Loop. On Madison Street, several of the fallen trees damaged cars.

Fallen trees were also seen in Bridgeview blocking streets and driveways.

The NWS has not yet released details about a possible large tornado reported on the ground Monday night at O’Hare International Airport and another possible tornado at Midway International Airport. A tornado was also reported during the storms in Sugar Grove.

Monday night was a back-to-back night of tornadoes in the Chicago area, and also the second consecutive night that tornadoes hit the city — a rare occurrence in itself. On Sunday night, Two tornadoes were confirmed south of the city and a third in Elburn.
