Officers on scene in Atlanta as they investigate the identity of the murder suspect

The New York Police Department confirmed Saturday evening that officers are on the scene in Atlanta in connection with the murder of a health insurance executive.

NYPD said officers are here to help if needed. On Friday, the Atlanta Police Department announced it was joining the investigation after photos of the suspect’s face surfaced.

“When and if they identify exactly who the subject is, they will execute possible search warrants, talk to friends and family, try to determine a motivation, try to figure out where this person could be going,” said Marc Benjamin.

Benjamin retired from the FBI as a Supervisory Special Agent in the Atlanta Field Office. He said the FBI is involved because the case involves multi-state travel.

Investigators believe the suspect boarded a Greyhound bus from Atlanta to New York, where he shot United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson 10 days later.

Thompson was supposed to be in New York for an investor conference.

The words “deny,” “defend” and “impeach” were scrawled on the ammunition, two law enforcement officials told the AP on Thursday. The messages echo the phrase “delay, deny, defend,” often used by attorneys and critics about insurers delaying payments, denying claims and defending their actions.

“There are certainly other ways to show your distaste for any system,” Benjamin said.

He said the lack of enthusiasm among some is noticeable online. However, the FBI increased the reward for turning in the killer to $50,000 on Saturday morning.

“I expect we will see many citizens come forward and provide whatever assistance they can,” Benjamin said.
