Xander Schauffele has finally won a major championship.
Schauffele, thanks to a clutch birdie on the 18th, defeated Bryson DeChambeau to win the PGA Championship on Sunday afternoon in Valhalla. He posted a 65 in the final round, which took him to 21 under par for the week and gave him the one-shot win at Louisville. After coming close so many times, he has now won a major championship.
DeChambeau, who hung out with Schauffele most of the day, made a huge long birdie putt on the 18th to get to 20 under. That led to a big party on the last green. He then immediately went to the shooting range to continue working while Schauffele finished his round. DeChambeau’s playing partner, Viktor Hovland, had a birdie look to join them in the lead on the 18th as well, but he ended up three-putting for bogey. That earned him a third-place finish at 18 under this week.
Despite having to stand in the bunker to hit his second shot on the final hole, he left himself with a putt of about six feet for birdie. Although he rolled around the cup, the putt fell and gave him the victory.
Thomas Detry finished fourth this week at 15 under, alongside Colin Morikawa, with Shane Lowry and Justin Rose tied for sixth at 14 under.
Scottie Scheffler, who was arrested off the course in Louisville on Friday morning, finished at 13 under the week after posting a round of 6 under to end the tournament.

Five winners in five years at the PGA Championship
Schauffele is the fifth different golfer to win the PGA Championship in the past five tournaments since Brooks Koepka went back-to-back in 2018 and 2019. Collin Morikawa won in 2020 – the first major of the year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Phil Mickelson won in 2021, Justin Thomas won in 2022 and Koepka won his third PGA a year ago.
Scottie Scheffler sneaks into the top 10
The tournament’s top 11 players were within eight shots of each other when Scottie Scheffler finished in a tie for eighth place with a 65 on Sunday.
Viktor Hovland finished third, three shots behind Schauffele, while Thomas Detry finished fourth and three shots behind Hovland. Below you will find the complete top 10.

Schauffele calms down questions about tournament closures
Xander Schauffele entered the PGA Championship but failed to finish two major events earlier this season. He was in the final bracket at both the Players Championship and Wells Fargo a week ago and failed to win as Scottie Scheffler took home the title at Sawgrass and Rory McIlroy went nuclear.
Today he was the closest. He came in with the co-lead at 15 under and shot a 6-under 65 to win by one over Bryson DeChambeau.
Schauffele’s 21 under par is the lowest score from par in major championship history. He also went wire-to-wire this weekend after shooting a first-round 62 to open the tournament.

The putt was quite straight and hit the left edge of the cup and circled around the back before dropping in.
It is the first major in Schauffele’s career.

Schauffele hits his chip to about 5 or 6 feet. If he makes that birdie putt, he will be the winner of the 2024 PGA Championship.
If he misses and makes par, we have a three-hole play-off.
Xander was so far down in the bunker and he played his approach perfectly. He’ll now be looking up and down for a birdie to win this thing from about 35 yards out.
Bryson is still in the zone as he waits for Xander to finish at 18.
Down on the practice range, DeChambeau hits bombs as the tournament plays on a big screen to his left. DeChambeau takes a few glances at the screen and keeps swinging.

Viktor Hovland just left his birdie look at the low end of the cup. He will finish at 18 under this week, which will be good for a solo third-place finish at the PGA Championship.

Robert MacIntyre, after narrowly missing the rare albatross on his approach, just made the second eagle of the day on the 18th. That moved him into the top 10 and undersized for his round. The perfect finish that will earn him a significant increase in his salary this afternoon.
Well, Bryson landed in the fairway bunker and Hovland landed in the first cut on the 18th. Not a good start to a must-have birdie hole for either of them.

Bryson DeChambeau missed a good look at the birdie on the 17th, so he heads to the final hole, still a shot behind Xander Schauffele. Hovland also missed his birdie look, which was far better than DeChambeau’s.
The two have to make a move here at the end if they want to win this. Otherwise, Schauffele will just have to persevere.
