Police investigating murder Wednesday morning after body found near downtown Kansas City

Police are investigating after a man was found dead with a gunshot wound near downtown Kansas City on Wednesday morning, police said.

Officers were dispatched to Troost Avenue and East 19th Street just before 9 a.m. after receiving a call about a possible body. They found a man with a gunshot wound and paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Detectives are investigating the death as a homicide, said Sgt. Phil DiMartino, a spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department.

Police have not yet released the name or age of the victim.

Detectives were searching Wednesday for witnesses, physical evidence or surveillance footage to help determine what led up to the shooting. No other information was available Wednesday.

The killing is the 95th in Kansas City in 2024, according to data kept by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. This time last year, Kansas City had recorded 133 homicides.

Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact detectives directly at 816-234-5043 or anonymously to the TIPS hotline at 816-474-8477. There is a reward of up to $25,000 for information submitted anonymously to the TIPS hotline.
