The Polish citizen, identified as Pawel K, was accused of being willing to help Russian military intelligence gather information about the security of Rzeszow-Jasionka airport, the main stopover for officials traveling to and from Ukraine, the statement said.

The suspect faces eight years in prison if convicted under the espionage laws.

The investigation was carried out in close coordination between the Polish and Ukrainian authorities and the main evidence in the case was obtained from the Ukrainian side, according to the statement.

German authorities said Thursday they had arrested two men suspected of spying for Russia and membership of a terror group planning acts of sabotage, a case the interior minister called “particularly serious.”

Zelenskiy has used Rzeszów-Jasionka airport regularly on international trips as he tries to drum up support for his country more than two years after Russia’s massive invasion. Located 100 km from a Ukrainian border crossing at Medyka, the airport has also served as the main hub for Western military aid to Ukraine.
