SC woman arrested after neighbor she was arguing with was killed, sheriff says

A South Carolina woman was arrested Wednesday on multiple charges after a man who was her neighbor was shot and killed, the Richland County Sheriff’s Department said.

Charnika Wright, 46, was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, the sheriff’s department said in a news release.

According to the release, officers responded to a report of a shooting in the cul-de-sac of Hedgefiled Court around 3 p.m. That’s in Irmo, just off Broad River Road and not far from the intersection with Lake Murray Boulevard.

Before arriving, deputies were told the suspected shooter, Wright, was still there, the sheriff’s department said. When the first deputy arrived in the area, he located and detained Wright, the release said.

The deputy also found a man nearby who had been shot in the upper body, the sheriff’s department said. Emergency responders provided care before paramedics took the victim to a local hospital, where he died shortly afterward from injuries sustained in the shooting, the release said.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the victim.

No other injuries were reported.

The sheriff’s department said the shooting “was the result of a neighbor dispute.” No further information about the dispute was available.

Wright was booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, jail records show. No bond has been set and Wright remains behind bars, according to jail records.
