The New Hampshire State Police Marine Patrol is currently conducting a search and recovery operation after a woman drowned at the Big Island Pond.
Saturday around 5:30 p.m., first responders were dispatched to Chase Island Road for reports of someone screaming for help.
Marine Patrol officers, along with members of the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, Atkinson Police Department, Atkinson Fire Department, Hampstead Police Department, Hampstead Fire Department, Derry Police Department, Derry Fire Department, PrideStar EMS, Plaistow Fire/Rescue and EMS , and the Salem Fire Department responded.
Initial investigations show that the person fell through the icy water and drowned.
Recovery efforts continue while the search is suspended until daylight.
The New Hampshire State Police and Marine Patrol are reminding people to use caution before heading out onto the open ice.
