NEW YORK– A wintry mix of rain and snow falls during the morning commute through the New York City area.
A snow shower warning has been issued for parts of New Jersey until 9:15 a.m. A winter weather warning has also been issued for Sullivan and Ulster counties, and a wind warning is in effect for most of the area.
It’s a First Alert Weather Day as our weather team monitors conditions. Here you can see the system timings and totals.
Rain and wind around NYC, snow in the north and west
There has not been much snow accumulation in and around the city as temperatures have not been in the ideal range for snow to remain overnight. The exception to this is the heavier band of snow that pushed through early this morning, but that was short-lived.
Despite the appearance of winter, there is still officially no snow for Central Park. For that to happen, we need to receive at least a tenth of an inch.
However, the Catskill area has already picked up about 5 inches of snow; Danbury, CT received approximately 2.5 inches of snow; and Brooksville, NJ picked up about 2″.
Even on Long Island, temperatures have risen about a trace to 1 inch, but at such high temperatures, much of it will continue to melt.
Remember, this is all part of a clipper system that contains a lot of moisture, but still has enough energy to support a few snow showers during the day. And beyond that, severe cold in parts of the Midwest, where we see below-zero wind chills this morning.
As for our area, afternoon temperatures will be in the 30s, but you’ll want to dress for the 20s due to gusty winds. That said, think about layers, especially tomorrow as wind chills will linger in the teens and 20s across the area
Fortunately, dry weather is expected this weekend. And although it starts cold, we will recover on Sunday with highs around 40 degrees.
