CHICAGO – Tensions were high Friday afternoon after counter-protesters carrying American flags appeared on the University of Chicago quad.
University of Chicago police formed a line and blocked counter-protesters from mingling with the pro-Palestinian group.
The pro-Palestinian group, UChicago United for Palestine, has been camping in the quad since Monday.
University leaders met with the pro-Palestinian protesters on Thursday. The protesters said the university had conducted insincere negotiations.
The university’s president released a statement on Friday, saying in part:
“Left to its own devices, there is no end in sight, and disruptions will continue to increase. The encampment protesters have ignored our policies instead of working with them, despite UChicago being an institution that offers many avenues for expressing views.”
Similar protests are taking place on other campuses, including Northwestern University and DePaul, where demonstrators are currently keeping the peace.
Northwestern recently reached a resolution with their protesters last week.
