The Detroit Lions have a sense of humor to match their sharp new uniforms.
As is the case with many new uniform reveals, Detroit’s new uniforms made their way to social media long before the team was allowed to release them. Is it all part of a marketing plan? Probably. But we fall for it anyway.
First, the uniforms. Because they are quite sharp, although they are not that different from the clothes they have worn in recent years. That’s part of the charm.
Justin Rogers of the Detroit News said the uniforms leaked because an advertisement to purchase the new jerseys prematurely appeared online. The jerseys were supposed to be unveiled on Thursday evening, but we already saw them on Thursday morning.
The hard part about holding your new uniforms for an unveiling is that you have to keep all the external business partners aligned with the launch with so little oversight. Fanatics ad leaked via USA Today Network and appeared to show the Lions new look jerseys. pic.twitter.com/qNPGe737TR

The return of the black uniforms is remarkable. The Lions dumped that one after the 2017 season, but they’re coming back as an alternate.
The main home and away uniforms are virtually the same as what the team wore in the Barry Sanders era. That’s not a bad thing. It’s not a crazy overhaul. Just simplify things with a few modern touches. Well done.
Whether the team was happy or angry, the uniforms were leaked, they played along with it. First, a sarcastic video of defensive tackle Alim McNeill thanking whoever leaked the uniforms.
Then a message titled “Inside job?” while quarterback Jared Goff joked that he would take a photo of the black jerseys to post on social media.
Hey, there’s no point in getting mad once the uniforms are released. Unless the Lions were involved somehow.
The Lions will still unveil their big uniforms Thursday night, and they also got some nice buzz on social media Thursday morning. It worked for everyone.
