The seven-year-old was shot by a teenager during a sleepover, the South Carolina sheriff says

A child was shot Saturday evening during a sleepover at a South Carolina home and a teenager has been arrested, according to the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office.

At approximately 11:35 p.m., emergency services received a 911 call about a 7-year-old being shot and emergency crews responded to a home in the 400 block of Crosby Circle, the sheriff’s office said in a news release Sunday. That’s in Greenville, near exit 46 on Interstate 85.

Officers found the child shot at least once in the abdomen, and he was taken to a local hospital, according to the statement. No further information about the 7-year-old’s condition was available.

No other injuries were reported.

Following an investigation, deputies arrested a 13-year-old male after discovering the teen shot the victim during an alleged sleepover at the victim’s home, the sheriff’s office said.

The teen had left the victim’s home and was later found at his residence just a few houses away, the release said.

There was no word on any charges against the 13-year-old.

Information was not available on a motive for the shooting, or how the teen obtained a gun, but it remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office.

There was no word on whether the teen is still in custody, and if so, where he is being held.
