The Southside Park Pool in Sacramento could reopen this summer. When will the renovations start?

Sacramento’s Southside Park Pool is getting the money it needs to reopen after sitting empty for the past two summers.

On Tuesday, the Sacramento City Council approved a roughly $600,000 contract to repair the community pool at 2107 Sixth St. under Adams Pool Specialties.

Construction will begin in June and crews will “work hard to ensure the work is done as quickly and efficiently as possible,” city spokeswoman Gabby Miller wrote in an email Thursday.

There is no expected opening date, she added, although the city expects sometime this season.

The pool’s current fiberglass finish has “deterred its longevity”, posing health risks to swimmers, according to a council report.

The contractor is expected to install new tiles, pool and depth markers, rope anchors, covers and wall inlets, a device to direct the flow of water.

A white plaster finish will be installed to “ensure safety and functionality.”

Sacramento will experience its first 100-degree days of the year on Wednesday. Meteorologists warn that scorching temperatures could continue.

What was the robbery?

The city closed the Southside Park Pool in the summer of 2022 to replace the fiberglass liner after swimmers developed rashes.

The resolution was not immediate because construction costs for other projects were higher than expected, according to a previous Sacramento Bee story.

About a year ago, Assemblyman Kevin McCarty, D-Sacramento, announced $500,000 was being taken from California’s budget to complete renovations and reopen the pool this summer.

Southside Park Neighborhood Association member Marni Leger helps Assemblyman Kevin McCarty, D-Sacramento, hold a replica check Wednesday, June 8, 2023, for $500,000 from the state to help reopen the closed Southside Park pool. When will the Southside Park Pool in Sacramento reopen?

The city said the pool will reopen this summer, but there is no expected opening date.

Miller said the “opening date will be announced to the public as soon as it can be confirmed.”

On Wednesday, Sacramento will endure its first 100-degree day of the year and meteorologists warn temperatures could linger.

The nearest community pool, Clunie Pool at 601 Alhambra Blvd., is 5.6 miles away or about a 43-minute bus ride from Southside Park.

The town operates 12 community pools, four shallow children’s pools and an aquatic complex. The list includes McClatchy Park Pool in Oak Park and the new North Natomas Aquatics Complex.
