Trevor Lawrence: “There have definitely been some conversations” about a new contract

After completing his third season, Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence will be eligible for a second contract.

Lawrence has shown potential since being selected No. 1 overall, especially over the past two seasons under head coach Doug Pederson. But Lawrence showed signs of decline last year, completing 66 percent of his passes for 4,016 yards with 21 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. He also lost seven fumbles.

Still, there’s no indication the Jaguars aren’t interested in eventually signing Lawrence to a lucrative extension.

Asked about his contract situation on Tuesday, Lawrence noted: “There have definitely been some conversations about it.”

“As far as that goes right now, that’s not really my focus,” Lawrence said. “I would obviously like to be a Jag for as long as possible. We love it here and I love where we are going as an organization and I feel like I’m only getting better every year. My best ball is certainly in front of me. So from that point of view, of course, that would be great.

“But like you said, this is going into my fourth year. It’s not like this will necessarily be my last season. A lot can happen. So right now, this isn’t really my focus. Ultimately, it’s not my focus .” My job will not change whether or not I am renewed for the season. My job is to go win games and be the best I can be for this team so we can have a chance to win a Super Bowl.”

Lawrence added that even if he were to receive a contract extension soon, his job would not change. In fact, it would only put even more expectations and pressure on him to perform. While it wouldn’t change his mentality, there would be comfort in a new deal.

“Obviously I can’t lie, it would be nice to have done that and feel good about it,” Lawrence said. “But no, that’s not really the emphasis at the moment. I know where we are, I know where we are going and I know what I have to do. There are some improvements I need to make in the future.”
