Two people have been displaced in West Yarmouth after a house fire on Christmas Day

A Christmas Day house fire in West Yarmouth left an elderly woman and a young man without a place to live, according to the Yarmouth Fire Department.

On December 25 around 11 p.m., firefighters responded to a call from a woman occupying an RV on the Gill Ave property. 9, who noticed a fire on the second floor of the house.

The woman’s husband entered the house to rescue the woman from the second floor and the man, who was in the basement. He also tried unsuccessfully to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher, Yarmouth Fire Chief Enrique Arrascue said.

The fire was largely contained to a second-floor bedroom, where it started, but other parts of the home also suffered smoke and water damage, according to fire officials.

“The fire was out within an hour and then it probably took a couple of hours to clear it,” Arrascue said.

No one was injured, according to a department news release. The American Red Cross assisted with the woman and man who were in the home. The department is conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
