Monday is Veterans Day, a federal holiday honoring those who have served in the military. This holiday falls on November 11 every year and results in the closure of most banks and some government buildings.
Here’s what is and isn’t open in the Baltimore area.
Are banks closed on Veterans Day?
Banks are generally closed on Veterans Day, as the Federal Reserve observes the holiday. Some services, such as ATMs, are still available.
M&T Bank, CFG Bank, Bank of America, Wells Fargo and most other financial institutions are closed Monday.
Are schools closed?
While some school districts in the U.S. close for Veterans Day, most public schools in Maryland do not.
However, Harford County Public Schools are closed in honor of Veterans Day.
Public schools in Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Howard County, Anne Arundel County and Carroll County are open as normal. However, Maryland law does require public schools to devote at least part of the day to “appropriate exercises” related to the holiday.
Southern High School in Anne Arundel County was closed Monday due to a power outage, the school district said.
Will mail be delivered on Veterans Day?
The United States Postal Service observes the federal holiday, so mail is not delivered and post offices are closed.
However, private delivery services such as UPS and FedEx are still largely open. All UPS services are fully available, as are most FedEx services, although FedEx Express and FedEx Ground Economy freight are running on a modified schedule.
Are the courts open on Veterans Day?
According to the Maryland Judiciary, all Maryland courts will be closed Monday for Veterans Day.
The U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland in Baltimore and Greenbelt is also closed for the federal holiday.
Are libraries in the Baltimore area open on Veterans Day?
Many library systems are closed on Mondays, but there are exceptions.
Anne Arundel County Public Libraries are open. However, the public library systems are closed in Baltimore, Harford, Carroll and Howard counties, as well as the Enoch Pratt Free Library locations in Baltimore City.
What about waste collection?
There will be no trash collection or street sweeping in Baltimore City on Veterans Day this year, according to the city’s Department of Public Works.
City DPW facilities including Northwest Transfer Station, Quarantine Road Landfill, Northwest Residential Drop-off Center, Southwestern Residential Drop-off Center and Eastern Residential Drop-off Center are all closed to residents and transit workers on Monday.
In Baltimore County, trash and recyclables are being collected on the normal schedule, the county government says. The county’s waste and recycling facilities will be open.
In Anne Arundel County, trash pickup will continue as usual, but the county’s landfills and recycling centers are closed.
Howard County will have regular trash, recycling, yard waste and food waste collections on Mondays, and the Alpha Ridge Landfill will be open.
Carroll County’s Resource Recovery Park and Northern Landfill are open regular hours. The Harford County Waste Management Center and Mulch and Compost Facility will be closed.
