What McVay Thought of 49ers QB Purdy’s Endless Battles Against the Rams originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area
Star 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy ran around SoFi Stadium during San Francisco’s 27-24 loss to Los Angeles on Sunday, and Rams coach Sean McVay was all smiles.
The 24-year-old picked up 41 yards on 10 carries during Week 3 of the 2024 NFL season and had a few plays where he danced around the swaying 49ers pocket all day.
McVay couldn’t resist talking to reporters after the win and had to laugh when he remembered how often Purdy used his legs.
“I thought, ‘Purdy, oh my God. He just runs around endlessly on some of those plays,'” McVay said humorously (h/t Los Angeles Rams ). “Yeah, you guys are laughing with me — it’s not funny, is it? Jeez.”
Purdy’s scrambler talent was on full display.
But that was also true of his entire game.
Purdy finished the game 21 of 29 — with six of those incompletions as drops — for 258 yards and three touchdowns. He also made history with a 137.1 passer rating, tying Pro Football Hall of Famer Kurt Warner (16) for the second-most regular-season games of 100 or better by a signal-caller in their first 25 starts in NFL history.
The Iowa State product’s mobility has left McVay scratching his head at times. McVay, however, has great admiration for Purdy and his overall effort on Sunday.
“You know what? He’s a competitor,” McVay said. “I have a tremendous amount of respect for him and what they’ve done since he walked in there.”
Purdy began the season with an undefeated record against San Francisco’s NFC West rivals, posting a 93.1 passer rating with 206 yards against Los Angeles in Week 2 of the 2023 season.
McVay’s team was better than Purdy’s this time, however. The quarterback’s skills did not go unnoticed, even after the two teams came to blows after the game.
