When does winter start? When is the first day of winter? A look at the winter solstice

Winter is upon us and Ohioans can likely expect milder than normal temperatures this year, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s 2024-25 winter forecast.

Federal forecasters are still waiting to see if La Niña, a natural climate pattern, has formed. Characterized by cooler-than-average seawater in the central and eastern Pacific Oceans, La Niña events occur when the northern part of the United States typically experiences colder and stormier winter conditions, while the south is warmer and less stormy.

It’s almost time to have your furnace checked and your thermostats adjusted. This is when the 2024 winter season takes place.

When does winter start in 2024?

The winter solstice of 2024 will occur Saturday December 21.

According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, the solstice is at 4:21 a.m. ET in the Northern Hemisphere. It is the day with the fewest hours of sunlight all year – essentially the ‘shortest day’ of the year.

Unlike other long-term forecasts, the almanac also predicts that Ohio will have a wet and cold winter.

When does winter end?

Winter ends on Thursday, March 20, 2025, once the vernal equinox (vernal equinox) begins.

Daylight saving time will already have returned by the time spring arrives. On Sunday, March 9, our clocks go forward in the early morning hours.
