Winter weather and hazardous road conditions possible this weekend in central Kansas

Central Kansas’ first winter weather event of the year will likely head this way, with the National Weather Service issuing a winter storm watch for this weekend.

On watch, the NWS in Wichita said dangerous winter weather, with possible blizzard-like conditions and snow and ice accumulations, is expected Saturday afternoon through Sunday afternoon in an area that includes Hutchinson and Salina.

“Winds could be as high as 35 miles per hour, causing blowing and blowing snow, along with blizzard-like conditions at times,” the weather service said.

The timing of expected weather varies by part of the state

While much of the state is expected to see some sort of winter weather starting early Saturday afternoon or earlier, the time people can expect precipitation will depend on where they live.

According to a timing chart from NWS Wichita, Salina could see a “wintry mix” around noon Saturday and through the night, with snow expected to start around 6 a.m. Sunday.

As for Hutchinson, rain and/or a “wintry mix” is also expected Saturday afternoon, expected to change to a “wintry mix” overnight, before snow also begins around 6 a.m. Sunday.

What precautions should people take before this weather?

The weather service said this weather event will likely impact travel through central and northeastern Kansas, including on roads through the area.

It is recommended that drivers consider alternative plans for their travel this weekend.

According to the weather service, those who must travel during this time should inform friends and family of their plans and take precautions, including checking the latest weather forecasts and road conditions and preparing their winter car kits.

These kits should include things like a first aid kit, cell phone and charger, snow chains or winter tires, jumper cables, torches, water and snacks, flashlight, a bag of sand or kitty litter, blanket, warm clothing such as boots, mittens and hats – a tow rope and a shovel, ice scraper and snow brush.

The city of Salina is already preparing for the weather

A press release from the City of Salina states that the city’s streets department is preparing for this winter event.

According to the release, the city will begin salting all bridge decks and elevated surfaces ahead of possible weather.

“Salt trucks are equipped and personnel will be on standby, ready to deploy when needed,” the release said.

The city also said it is asking the public to leave room when approaching salt trucks from behind because they are likely to spread salt on the roadway and driving too close can cause additional challenges and safety concerns for operators and other motorists.
