4 victims released from hospital after shooting on I-75 in Kentucky

Four of the five people shot on Interstate 75 Saturday night have been released from the hospital, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said Thursday.

All five are expected to recover.

Beshear made the update during a visit Thursday morning to Laurel County, where authorities have been on a five-day manhunt for a man suspected of opening fire on vehicles traveling along a busy stretch of I-75 about 11 miles (14 kilometers) north of London.

The suspect, 32-year-old Joseph Couch, is believed to have fled into the woods of northern Laurel County after shooting at cars from a ledge overlooking the highway. Twelve cars were hit, but no fatalities have been reported.

Local, state and federal agents have searched for Couch using drones, helicopters, police dogs and on foot. But the rugged terrain, including cliffs, sinkholes, caves and thick undergrowth, has slowed the search in a location that spans thousands of acres.

Authorities have since recovered Couch’s car, as well as the AR-15 he is believed to have used in the shooting.

Couch has been charged with five counts of attempted murder and five counts of first-degree assault.

Police identified the victims of Monday’s shooting as Rebecca Puryear, Renee Walker, Erick Tabin, Norma Liberia and Janet Booth.
